The fish is a poker term for the player who is going to be easiest to take money from. It is said that if you can not spot the fish at your table then you are the fish.

The best way to avoid being the fish is to look like you belong. This means do not walk in the room and look overly excited. It has to seem like you have been there before and you know what you are doing at all times. There are many games played in a poker room so make sure you sit at a table playing a game you know well like Texas Holdem for example.

If you thought you could walk in and learn the game as you  play the only thing that is going to happen is that you are going to go broke fast, and then you are going to hear laughter as you walk away from the table with your head down and defeated. Make sure you know all the inns and outs of the game before coming to play in the casino. At home on the computer online playing against computer opponents is the best way to start, then eventually join a weekly texas holdem game with friends then go online and play fro real money before going near a casino poker room.

It is very important to blend in well at the table you are playing at. Texas Holdem has a language of its own, and if you want to be taken serious you are going to have to learn the lingo.  There are many online sources that will explain all the Texas Holdem expressions, but to know them is not enough you have to make it seem natural for you to be using them. You have to truly understand how they are used so that you understand all the jokes and comments made. If you don’t laugh at the right time or laugh at the wrong time the jig will be up and you will be marked as the fish.

Do not under any circumstances come to the casino to play Texas Holdem dressed like the players you see playing in tournaments you see on television. Many of these players are pros and are sponsored and that is why everything they wear says something about Texas Holdem and poker. If you wear this stuff and no one knows who you are everyone will know you are just some fool beginner trying to look cool, but if you have real poker skills this can be an advantage to you everyone will expect you to be the fish and they will all underestimate you, giving you a big advantage.

Every player at a texas holdem poker table that spots you as the fish will then begin to focus on you till they find your tells, and believe me we all have them. It is just experience that allows some of us to hide them better then others.
