Kansas is a large farming state in the Midwest, with a population of about 2.6 million people. Its largest city is Wichita, with a metropolitan area population of over 500,000. Wichita has historically been a center of the aircraft manufacturing industry and still has thousands of jobs in this field. Topeka is the capital of Kansas. The second largest city is Overland Park, a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri. Kansas City, Kansas is the third largest city, of about 146,000, just across the Missouri River from Kansas City, Missouri. Kansas City, KS has a Chevrolet plant. The agricultural production of the state include wheat, in which it is number one and cattle, sheep, sorghum, soybeans, cotton, hogs, and corn. The industrial outputs are transportation equipment, commercial and private aircraft, food processing, chemical products, machinery, petroleum and mining. Kansas ranks 8th in U.S. oil production and in natural gas production. Increased coal-bed methane production contributed to maintaining natural gas production. In terms of hunting and fishing, there are plenty of opportunities in Kansas. The eastern portion of the state has large numbers of white-tailed deer and also a smaller number of elk. The most favored fish in the state are flathead and channel catfish, which can be found in most of the 24 reservoirs in the state. There are three major rivers in the state, the Arkansas, the Missouri and the Kansas, which are navigable and open to the public.

Major company headquarters in Kansas include the Sprint Nextel Corporation, and Embarq, in Overland Park. Sprint Nextel is the third largest wireless phone network, with over 53 million subscribers. It also has the largest broadband network, and is a major employer in Kansas. Embarq is formerly the local telephone branch of Sprint Nextel and is the fourth largest local exchange telephone company in the United States. YRC Company is a conglomerate involved in transportation, based in Overland Park. Payless Shoes has a major distribution center in Topeka, the capital of Kansas.

Spirit AeroSystems, Inc., based in Wichita, Kansas, is the world's largest aero structures manufacturer. The company builds several important pieces of Boeing aircraft, including the fuselage of the 737, portions of the 787 fuselage, and the cockpit of nearly all of its airliners. It was spun off of Boeing Corporation when Boeing sold its Wichita division to the investment firm Onex. Boeing Integrated Defense Systems retained its military business in Wichita, which lies next door.

Cessna Aircraft Company, headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, is a manufacturer of general aviation aircraft, from small two-seat, single-engine aircraft to business jets.
In 1992, Textron Inc. bought Cessna. The defense contractor, Raytheon also had a large plant in Kansas, which was sold to a partnership formed by Toronto-based Onex and Wall Street investment bank Goldman Sachs. The $3.3 billion deal creates Hawker Beechcraft Corp. and includes Raytheon facilities in Salina, KS.
The University of Kansas is a large public university system with campuses in Lawrence, Edwards, and its Medical Center in Kansas City, KS, with a system total of 27,000 students. KU Med, in Kansas City is a medical school with an attached hospital.
